selectively permeable some substances can pass through the membrane while others cannot.
Diffusion the process by which molecules move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
Osmosis the diffusion of water molecules through a selectively permeable membrane.
Passive transport the movement of dissolved materials through a cell membrane without using cellular energy.
Active transport the movement of materials through a cell membrane using cellular energy.
photosynthesis the process by which a cell captures energy in sunlight and uses it to make food.
autotroph Organisms that can make their own food.
heterotroph Organisms that cannot make their own food.
pigment colored chemical compounds that absorb light.
chlorophyll the main photosynthetic pigment in chloroplasts.
stomata small openings on the undersides of the leaves, where carbohydrates passes.
