3.1 Science Vocab.

TermDefinition
element any substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances.
compound when two or more elements combine chemically.
carbohydrate an energy-rich organic compound made of the elements carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.
lipid energy-rich organic compounds made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. examples:fats:oils; contain more than carbs.
protein large organic molecules made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and in some cases, sulfur.
amino acid combined with cells to form proteins.
enzyme a type of protein that speeds up a chemical reaction in a living thing.
nucleic acid very long organic molecules made of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, and phosphorus.
DNA genetic material that carries information about an organism and is passed from parent to offspring.
RNA helps in producing proteins; found in cytoplasm.
