| element | any substance that can not be broken down into simpler substances |
| compound | when two elements combine chemically |
| carbohydrates | energy rich organic compound made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen; major source of energy |
| lipids | energy rich organic compound made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, lipids contain more energy than carbohydrates; fats & oils |
| protiens | large organic compounds made up of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and in some cases sulfur |
| amino acids | combine with cells to form protiens |
| enzyme | type of protein that speeds up a chemical reaction in living things |
| nucleic acids | very long organic molecules made of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen and phosphorus; contain instructions that cells need to carry out functions |
| DNA | the genetic material that carries information about an organism and is passed from parent to offspring |
| RNA | found inside of cytoplasm as well as in the nucleus and is important in producing protiens. |
