element any substance that can not be broken down into simpler substances
compound when two elements combine chemically
carbohydrates energy rich organic compound made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen; major source of energy
lipids energy rich organic compound made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, lipids contain more energy than carbohydrates; fats & oils
protiens large organic compounds made up of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and in some cases sulfur
amino acids combine with cells to form protiens
enzyme type of protein that speeds up a chemical reaction in living things
nucleic acids very long organic molecules made of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen and phosphorus; contain instructions that cells need to carry out functions
DNA the genetic material that carries information about an organism and is passed from parent to offspring
RNA found inside of cytoplasm as well as in the nucleus and is important in producing protiens.
