| Term | Definition |

| Element | Any substance that cannot be broken down into any simpler substance |
| Compound | Two elements chemically combined. Made up of the elements carbon and oxygen |
| Carbohydrate | an energy-rich organic compound made of the elements carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. |
| Lipid | energy-rich organic compounds made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen but, they contain more energy than carbohydrate. Some examples are fats and oils. |
| Protein | Large organic molecules made of carbon. |
| Amino acid | Combine to make up proteins. |
| Enzyme | type of protein that speeds up a chemical reaction in a living thing. |
| Nucleic acid | very long organic molecules made of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, and phosphorous. |
| DNA | Genetic material that carries information about an organism and is passed from parent to offspring. |
| RNA | Plays an important role in the production of proteins. Is in cytoplamsm |
