| Taxonomy | A discipline of biology primarily concerned with identifying, naming, and classifying species based on natural relationships. |
| Binomial nomenclature | Gives each species a scientific name with two parts. |
| Taxon | A named group of organisms. |
| Genus | A group of species that are closely related and share a common ancestor. |
| Family | The next highest taxon consisting of similar, related genera. |
| Order | contains related families. |
| Class | Contains related orders. |
| Phylum | For classifying animals. |
| Division | for classifying bacteria and plants. |
| Kingdom | A taxon composed of related phyla or divisions |
| Domain | THe broadest of all the taxa and contains one or more kingdoms. |
| Phylogeny | The evolutionary history of a species. |
| Character | Inherited features that vary among species. |
| Molecular clock | A model that is used to compare DNA sequences from two different species to estimate how long the species have been evolving since they diverged from a common ancestor. |
| Cladistics | A method that classifies organisms according to the order that they diverged from a common ancestor. |
| Cladogram | A branching diagram that represents the proposed phylogeny or evolutionary history of a species or group. |
| Archaea | Thought to be more ancient than bacteria and yet more closely related to Eukaryota ancestors. |
| Protist | Eukaryotic organisms that can be unicellular, colonial, or multicellular. |
| Fungus | A unicellular or multicellular Eukaryota that absorbs nutrients from organic materials i its environment. |
