What Biologist Do

| Biology | the science of life |
| Organism | anything that has or once had all characteristics of life |
| Organization | arranged in an orderly way |
| Growth | results in the addition of mass to an organism; and in many organisms, the formation of new cells and new structures |
| Development | the process of natural changes that take place during the life of an organism |
| Reproduction | the production of offspring |
| Species | a group of organisms that can breed with one another and produce fertile offspring |
| Stimulus | anything that is part of the environment and causes some sort of reaction by an organism |
| Response | reaction to a stimulus |
| Homeostasis | regulation of an organism's internal conditions to maintain life |
| Scientific Method | similar methods to gather information used by biologists |
| Hypothesis | testable explanation of a situation |
| Serendipity | occurence of accidental or unexpected bur fortunate results |
| Experiment | investigate a phenomenon in a controlled setting to test a hypothesis |
| Control Group | group used for comparison |
| Experimental Group | group exposed to the factor being tested |
| Independent Variable | what "I" am testing; what might affect the outcome of the experiment |
| Dependent Variable | what happens in the experiment, it "depends" |
| Constant | factor that remains fixed or "constant", doesn't change when the Independent and Dependent variables change |
| Data | information gained from observations |
