QuestionAnswer
tissue group of cells working together to perform specialized functional and structural roles
types of tissues muscular, nervous, connective, epithelial
epithelial tissues widespread throughout body, covers surfaces inside and out, always has a free surface to outer environment, major tissue type of our glands, anchored down by basement membrane
epithelial tissues cont. lack blood vessels, reproduce rapidly, tightly packed, protect/secrete/absorb/excrete/sensory perception
simple squamous single layered thin and flattened FUNCTION: diffusion, filtration, and osmosis occur LOCATIONS: air sacs of lungs, capillary walls, blood vessels, lining of the heart and ventral body cavity
simple cuboidal epithelium single layered cube shaped FUNCTION: secretion and absorption LOCATION: covers ovaries, lines kidney tubules and ducts of glands
simple columnar epithelium elongated single layered FUNCTION: secretion of digestive fluids, absorption of nutrients LOCATION: lining of uterus and digestive tract organs
pseudostratified columnar epithelium appear to be layered but aren't FUNCTION: secretion of mucus, propulsion of materials LOCATION: lining of the respiratory organs and tubes of the reproductive system
stratified squamous epithelium many layers of squamous cells, very thick FUNCTION: protection of underlying tissues LOCATION: skin, linings of mouth and throat
transitional epithelium specialized stratified layers of cuboidal and columnar cells FUNCTION: contract and relax with volume and tension changes in tissue LOCATION: urinary bladder and passageways of the urinary system

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.
