AP Biology

words and phrases needed for AP BIology

TermDefinition
Biology The scientific study of life
Biologists ask questions such as? How does a single cell develop into an organism? How does the human mind work? How do living things interact in communities?
Evolution the process of change that has transformed life on Earth (changes that happen over time)
Emergent Properties The result from the arrangement and interaction of parts within a system (the pieces that have to come together to make the whole)
Reductionism The reduction of complex systems to simpler components that are more manageable to study
Cell The lowest level of organization that con perform all activities required for life
Eukaryotic Cell It has membrane-enclosed organelles, the largest of which is usually the mucleus
Prokaryotic Cell A simpler, usually smaller and does not contain a nucleus or other membrane-enclosed organelles
DNA (#1) The substance of genes.
Chromosomes They contain most of a cell's genetic material in the form of DNA
DNA (#2) Deoxyribonucleic Acid
