Organelle Review
Review of organelles structure and function. Learned these in both 7th and 10th
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Cell Membrane | Phospholipid by-layer that controls what materials, gases, and molecules can or cannot enter or leave the cell. Is the barrier between the internal and external environment |
| Mitochondria | Energy producing organelle. Energy produces is in the form of ATP. Contains maternal DNA |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum | Network of flattened sacs or continuous tubes where proteins, carbohydrates and lipids are produced. |
| Golgi Body | Network of tubes that process proteins then package them into membrane bound vesicles to be shipped out of cell |
| Lysosome | Contains catalytic enzymes that break down cellular waste and debris inside the cell |
| microtubules | One component of the cytoskeleton within the cell. Serves to help cell maintain shape. Also aides in movement of secretory vesicles and centromeres throughout the cell |
| Cytoplasm | Gel-like substance enclosed inside the cell membrane. Organelles are found within this gel-like substance |
| Nucleus | Membrane bound organelle containing the chromosomes (DNA) |
| Nuclear Envelope | Membrane that surrounds and protects the contents of the nucleus (DNA) |
| Centriole | An important part of the centrosome, it organizes the microtubules needed for completion of cytokinesis |
| Vacuole | contains water and nutrients for the cell. Is much larger in plant cells than in animal cells. |
| Chromosomes | The cells genetic material that is enclosed inside the nucleus. It is composed of DNA, a double helix stand of nucleotides that code for the production of proteins. |
| Ribosome | Site of protein synthesis |
