| vertebrate | an animal with a backbone |
| invertebrate | an animal that lacks (does not have) an internal skeleton or bones |
| classification | grouping plants and animals by commom characteristics or traits |
| plants | multicellular (more than one cell) organisms that have cell walls and chloroplasts. They use the sun's energy to make food. |
| animals | many cell organisms that require oxygen and move from place to place |
| bacteria | tiny, single-celled organisms that do not have a nucleus |
| fungi | a kingdom of organisms, with a nucleus, that nutrients by decomposing other organisms |
| kingdom | the broadest level of biological classification |
| protist | a single-celled or multicellular organism that may share characteristics with plants, fungi, and animals |
| protozoa | animal-like protists |
| symmetry | matching body form, such as across opposite sides of a dividing line |
| birds | animals that have feathers, wings, beaks, hollow bones, and are warm blooded |
| reptiles | animals that have tough outer skin, most lay eggs, and are cold blooded |
| mammals | animals that have hair, feed milk to their young, most give birth to live young and have teeth |
