Basic Animal Science Terms and Definitions
| Term | Definition |

| Animal | A living organism that is able to move around voluntarily. |
| Vertebrate | Animals that have a backbone. |
| Invertebrate | Animals that do not have a backbone. |
| Mammal | Warm-blooded animals that have hair or fur and give birth to live young. |
| Reptile | Cold-blooded animals that have scales and usually lay eggs (some can have live young). |
| Bird | Warm-blooded animals that have feathers, wings, and lay eggs. |
| Amphibian | Cold-blooded animals that have moist skin, webbed feet, live on land and in water, and lay eggs. |
| Fish | Cold-blooded animals that have scales and fins, breath underwater using gills, and lay eggs. |
| Carnivore | An animal that eats meat. |
| Herbivore | An animal that eats plants. |
| Omnivore | An animal that eats both meat and plants. |
