Thorax and appendicular skeleton

TermDefinition
ribs twelve pairs of ribs form walls of thoracic cage; ribs articulate with the vertebral column posteriorly and then curve downward toward anterior body surface; three different types: true, false and floating
true ribs (vertebrosternal) Superior seven pairs of ribs that articulate with the sternum by costal cartilage
false ribs (vertebrochondral) Inferior five pairs of ribs that either articulate indirectly to the sternum via costal cartilage of rib #7 or do not articulate anteriorly with the sternum at all
floating ribs (vertebral) Most inferior two pairs of false ribs that do not attach anteriorly to the sternum at all
Sternum Typical flat bone; formed by fusion of three bones: manubrium, body and xiphoid process
Pectoral girdle Composed of scapula and clavicle
Pelvic girdle formed by hip bones that secure the lower extremities to the axial skeleton
