| ribs | twelve pairs of ribs form walls of thoracic cage; ribs articulate with the vertebral column posteriorly and then curve downward toward anterior body surface; three different types: true, false and floating |
| true ribs (vertebrosternal) | Superior seven pairs of ribs that articulate with the sternum by costal cartilage |
| false ribs (vertebrochondral) | Inferior five pairs of ribs that either articulate indirectly to the sternum via costal cartilage of rib #7 or do not articulate anteriorly with the sternum at all |
| floating ribs (vertebral) | Most inferior two pairs of false ribs that do not attach anteriorly to the sternum at all |
| Sternum | Typical flat bone; formed by fusion of three bones: manubrium, body and xiphoid process |
| Pectoral girdle | Composed of scapula and clavicle |
| Pelvic girdle | formed by hip bones that secure the lower extremities to the axial skeleton |
