| Free nerve endings | sensitive to touch and pressure |
| Tactile (Meissner's) corpuscles | sensitive to light tough and texture |
| Lamellated (pacinian) corpuscles | sensitive to heavy pressure and vibrations |
| If body temp is higher than 98.6 degrees | Blood vessels in the skin dilate and blood is shunted toward skin so body heat is lost (person turns red); sweat glands secrete. |
| If body temp is lower than 98.6 degrees | Blood vessels in the skin constrict and blood is shunted away from surface so heat can be maintained (person turns white). If this doesn't work, muscles may contract rhythmically causing shivering and generating more body heat. Sweat glands inactive. |
