Unit 6
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Bottle Neck Effect | occurs when a small group survives a natural disaster and has a different gene pool that the original population |
| Founders Effect | a small group migrates away from the larger group: the gene pool is not the same as the original pool |
| Genetic drift | a change in the allele frequency NOT due to natural selection: it is random |
| Adaptive radiation | after mass extinction, certain species fill in empty spaces and flourish. |
| Mechanical isolation | separation of a species due to incompatibility of genitalia ex. Great Danes and Chihuahuas. |
| Macroevolution | evolution in a huge way, causing species to go extinct and allowing others to succeed. ex. KT event 65 million years ago |
| Microevolution | evolution in a small way ex. a gene change in a population over 30 years. ex. furless vs furred rabbits |
| reproductive isolation | separation of a species due to the inability of producing offspring |
| Geographic Isolation | separation of a species due to a barrier like an ocean or a mountain. |
| Gene shuffling | genetic variation caused by segregation of alleles and crossing over during meiosis, along with sexual reproduction |
| Homozygous lethal alleles | stay in the population due to heterozygous individuals |
| Variation | the subtle differences among a species due to genetic differences. Ex. Egrets have short, medium, and long legs. |
| Diversity | It is the reason why the Peppered Moth of London survived in a a changing environment and did not go extinct |
| Speciation | the formation of a new species |
| Gene pool | the combined alleles for all members of a population |
| Mutations | can be neutral, beneficial, or deadly |
