Honors List 9
Unit 5
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Sister chromatids | Identical strands of DNA joined by a centromere |
| Histone | protein that DNA winds itself around so it can fit in the nucleus |
| diploid or 2N | two sets (i.e. pairs) of chromosomes (e.g. humans =46) |
| Haploid or 1N | one set of chromosomes (e.g. humans=23) |
| Meiosis | produces four genetically different cells; division of sex cells (i.e. gametes) |
| Chromosome | a threadlike structure that contains genetic information , two connected will form an X shape. |
| Mitosis | produces two identical daughter cells; only occurs in somatic (i.e. body) cells |
| DNA | molecule that stores genetic information in the nucleus |
| Crossing over | allows chromosomes to exchange genetic information |
| Chromatin | a structure that is made of loose DNA wrapped around histone proteins. |
| Asexual reproduction | the production of offspring with identical DNA from a single parent, like bacteria |
| Sexual reproduction | the production of offspring with different DNA from two parents, like mice |
| Variation | changes or differences due to the inherited DNA. |
| Homologous chromosomes | a set of chromosomes that has the same type of information one form each parent. |
| Law of Independent Assortment | states chromosomes segregate randomly as gametes of produced |
| Linked genes | genes found closely together on the same chromosome are often inherited together (red hair and freckles) |
