The Cell

TermDefinition
Fluid mosaic flexible lipid bilayer with proteins embedded
Polar phosphate head that faces the outside and inside of cell, freely interacting with water
Nonpolar fatty acid tails, attached to phosphate head that remain facing the inside of the cell membrane, avoiding water in and out of the cell
Active transport uses ATP energy to move molecules across the membrane
Passive transport does not require energy to move molecules across the membrane.
Simple diffusion small molecules like oxygen, water, and carbon dioxide can move thru the lipid bilayer from high to low concentration
Facilitated diffusion molecules travel from high to low, through channel protein
Cell membrane protects the cell and regulates what enters and leaves the cell.
