Anatomy -Study of structure
What are subdivisions of anatomy? -Gross/Macroscopic(e.g. regional, systemic, surface anatomy) -Microscopic(e.g. Cytology, Histology) -Developmental(e.g. embryology)
Developmental Anatomy The study of the fertilized egg developing into its adult form.
Embryology A subcategory of developmental anatomy.
Histology the study of tissues
Cytology the study of individual cellular structures
Pathology the study of anatomical changes due to disease
Physiology -study of the function of the body -subdivisions based on organ systems -often focuses on cellular and molecular level
Principal of Complementarity -Anatomy and physiology are inseparable --functions always reflects structure --what a structure can do depends on its specific form
Levels of structural organization -chemical -cellular -tissue -organ -organ system -organismal
