Pituitary Gland and Hormones
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Posterior pituitary gland hormones | vasopressin (ADH) and oxytocin |
| Vasopressin | anti-diuretic hormone (ADH). Involved in water retention |
| Oxytocin | involved in uteral contraction, birth, milk letout from breast (in females), and straightening out of the uterus for the sperm to swim (in males) |
| Anterior pituitary gland hormones | lutenizing hormone (LH) , follicle stimulating hormones (FSH), Prolactin, Growth Hormones, Adrenocorticotrophic Hormone (ACTH), Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) |
| Lutenizing Hormone (LH) | in females promotes ovulation. In males promotes spermatogenesis in Leydig cells |
| Follicle Stimulating Hormones (FSH) | in females stimulate follicles to mature; in males promotes spermatogenesis in Sertoli cells |
| Prolactin | in females promotes milk synthesis, and coordinates with oxytocin to promote milk let down |
| Growth Hormone | promotes overall growth in both males and females |
| Adrenocorticotrophic Hormone (ACTH) | signals the adrenal gland to produce cortisol in the cortex which leads to steroid hormones |
| Thyroid Stimulating Hormone | stimulates thyroid to release thyroxins (T3, T4); for body metabolism |
