| What are arteries? | blood vessels that bring blood AWAY from the heart |
| what are veins? | blood vessels that bring blood blood BACK to the heart |
| what are capillaries? | very narrow blood vessels where oxygen and other materials are exchanged between blood and body tissues |
| when is blood oxygen rich? | After the blood leaves the lungs, before it goes to body cells |
| when is blood oxygen poor? | After the blood leaves body cells, before it goes into the lungs |
| What types of cells make up blood and what do they do? | Red blood cells transport oxygen, white blod cells are part of the immune system, and platelets help blood clot |
| What is the immune system? | the body system that helps protect you from pathogens |
| What are pathogens? | Disease causing agents |
| How does the immune system fight off the pathogen? | by producing antibodies that are specifically made for that pathogen |
| What do histamines do? | Increase the temperature and blood flow to an rea. This makes it red and swollen |
| How do you develop active immunity? | Your body makes antibodies itself agianst the pathogen. T-cells in your body recognize the antigens on a pathogen and reproduce. The t-cells then signal b-cells to make antibodies to fight off the pathogen.The b-cells remember the antibodies for next time |
| WHat is the integumentary system? | The protective system that consists of your body's skin, hair, and nails. |
| What job does the skin have? | Keeps germs out, keeps water in, helps us sense the enviornment, and regulate temperature |
| How can a pathogen get through your skin? | through a cut or other injuryof the skin |
| how does skin regulate temperature? | By releasing sweat onto the surface of the skin from the sweat glands. Sweat glands are coiled tubes taht are located in the dermis. |
| How can you keep your skin healthy? | Keep it clean |
| What are the two layers of the skin? | Epidermis(outer layer, tough, protective, made with protein fibers) and dermis(inner layer, tough yet flexible) There is also a fatty tissue layer under the dermis |
| How does skin stay moist? | Oil glands connected to hair follicles release oil onto skin and hair to keep it from drying out. Oil glands and hair follicles are in the dermis too |
