Mechanical digestion the physical breakdown of large pieces of food into small pieces
Chemical digestion process by which enzymes break down food into smaller molecules that the body can use
Esophagus the tube connecting the mouth to the stomach; receives food when swallowed
Stomach large muscular sac that continues the mechanical and chemical digestion of the food; breaks down and holds food
Small intestine digestive organ in which most chemical digestion and absorption of food takes place; breaks down food with digestive enzyms & digestive acids
Large intestine organ in the digestion system that removes water from the undigested material that passes through it; also called colon; passes waste

mouth beginning of the digestive system; receives food
pacrease secretes digestive enzymes into duodenum producing amylase
liver absorbs nutrients from small intestines
gallbladder stores and secretes bile
rectum holds waste until it can be let out

What does the liver produce? bile
What is the function of the digestive system break down food & absorb nutrients
What do the salivary glands produce? amylase
What is the teeth for? chewing
What is the tongue for? manipulating food
How does the esophagus moves food? peristalis
What is the cardiac sphincter? it opens from the esophagus
What is the fundus? the top of the stomach
What is the rugae? the folds of the stomach
What is the pyloric sphincter? it opens to the small intestines
What 5 parts does the small intestines have? 1. duodenum 2. jejunum 3. ileum 4. mesentary 5. greater omentum
What is the function of the mesentary? supports the coils
What does the greater omentum do? it hangs like a curtin
What is the function of the large intestines? absorb water
What are the 4 parts of the large intestines? 1. cucum 2. colon 3. rectum 4. anus
The cucum is...... what? pouch-like
What does the colon consist of? -transvers -ascending -descending
What is the order of the digestive system? 1. mouth 2. esophagus 3. stomach 4. small intestines 5. large intestines
