What is Digestion? The breaking down of food.
Name the two types of Digestion. Physical and Chemical
Name a place in the body where physical digestion occurs. Mouth (teeth) or Stomach (muscles churning)
Name a place in the body where chemical digestion occurs. Mouth (saliva) or stomach (enzymes) or small intestine (enzymes)
What is an enzyme? A chemical that speeds up a reaction in the body without being used up itself.
Name an example of an enzyme and where it is found in the body. Amylase in your saliva
What is the general term for the substance the enzyme acts on? The substrate
Name the substrate of amylase. Starch
What is the product made when amylase breaks down starch in your mouth? Maltose
What is the name of the muscular action that squeezes food down the oesophagus? Peristalsis
What is the function of the liver? To produce bile
Where is bile stored? The gall bladder
What is the function of the stomach? Physical and chemical digestion of food and killing bacteria using acid
What is the function of the small intestine? Digestion and absorption of nutrients into the bloodstream
What is the function of the rectum? To store waste
What is the function of the pancreas? Production of enzymes and insulin
Name the four types of teeth. Molars, Premolars, Canines and Incisors
What is egestion? The elimination of food waste from the body.
