| 1st Level Consumer | AKA Primary Consumer. Organisms found in a food web/chain that directly consumes producers. |
| K-Value | The carrying capacity of an environment. (Carrying Capacity marks the maximum population size for a species based on the resources available to that species in a particular environment.) |
| Mesophyll | Specialized ground tissue that makes up the bulk of most leaves; performs most of a plant's photosynthesis. |
| Biomass | Total amount of living tissue within a given trophic level. |
| Autotroph | Organism that can capture energy from sunlight or chemicals and use it produce its own food from inorganic compounds; also called a producer. |
| Limiting Factor | Factor that causes the growth of a population to decrease. |
| Competition | A symbiotic relationship between or among living things for resources, such as food, space, shelter, mate, ecological status, etc. |
| Chemosynthesis | Process by which some organisms, such as certain bacteria, use chemical energy to produce carbohydrates. |
| Photoautotroph | Organism that uses energy from sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water to carbon compounds. |
