| Food Chain | Simplified model that shows a single path of energy flow through an ecosystem. |
| Predation | One organism eating another organism. |
| Autotroph | An organism that makes its own food; foundation of food chains. |
| Herbivore | Organism that eats producers. |
| Community | Group of interacting populations that live in the same geographic region. |
| Mutualism | Symbiotic relationship where both organisms gain. |
| Migration | Seasonal movement of an organism. |
| Carrying Capacity | Largest number of individuals in a species that the environment can support long-term. |
| Habitat | Physical area an organism lives in. |
| Abiotic | Nonliving environmental factors (soil, water, temp., humidity). |
| Biosphere | Layer of earth and its atmosphere where life exists. |
| Heterotroph | Organism that eats other organisms for energy. |
| Biomass | Total mass of living matter at each trophic level. |
| Biome | Large group of ecosystems that share the same climate and have similar communities. |
| Food Web | Model that shows the interconnectedness of food chains through an ecosystem. |
| Carnivore | Organism that eats mainly other animals. |
| Population | Group of organisms of the same species that occupy the same geographic place at the same time. |
| Ecosystem | Biological community and the abiotic factors that affect it. |
| Ecology | The study of organisms and their interactions with their environment. |
| Niche | Role or position of an organism in its environment. |
| Trophic Level | Each step in a food chain or food web. |
| Biotic Factors | Living factors in the environment. |
| Detritivore | An organism that decomposes organic material returning the nutrients for the producers. |
| Omnivore | Organism that eats both producers and consumers. |
