Incidence How often a disease occurs
Prevalence Factor affecting the incidence
Infection Invasion and colonization by pathogens, a departure from normal healthy state
Normal Flora Permanent residents of a host, the microorganisms normally found there
Opportunist Microorganism that is not normally a pathogen, but becomes one when given the opportunity
Communicable disease Contagious, can travel from
Pandemic Global incident of a disease
Epidemic An outbreak of disease over a wider area, but not worldwide.
Endemic A small, contained outbreak of a disease
Acute infection A severe infection
Chronic infection An infection that remains for a long period of time
Latent infection An infection that remains dormant for a time before showing symptoms
Local infection An infection that is contained to an area
Systemic infection A system-wide infection
Nosocomial infection Infection contracted in a hospital
Vertical gene transfer Transfer of genetic material between mother and daughter cells
Active infection Infection that replicates and shows symptoms
Serum Fluid portion of blood
Horizontal gene transfer Transfer of genetic material between different species to provide one with an advantage the other has
