ENZYMES

Definitions; properties

What is an enzyme A biological catalyst
What are enzymes made of (what is the nature of enzymes)? They are proteins
What is the active site of an enzyme The area on the enzyme that engages with the substrate
What is a substrate The chemical/substance that the enzyme engages with
What is the product(s) The result of an enzyme reaction
What is a bioreactor A container in which cells or their parts undergo required reactions
What does specific mean? Each enzyme can only 'fit' with (or match) one particular substrate
What does denatured mean? The shape of the active site is altered and the enzyme can no longer function
What is an immobilized enzyme? On that is attached to or trapped within an unreactive material
What is the induced fit theory? Enzymes mold themselves around their substrate to better fit it at the active site
