Evolution Change in the inherited characteristics of biological populations over successive generations.
Species One of the basic units of biological classification and a taxonomic rank
Genes The molecular unit of heredity of a living organism.
Survival of the fittest Evolutionary theory as an alternative (but less accurate) way of describing the mechanism of natural selection.
How can evolution refine existed adaptations? In some cases, a complex structure may have evolved from a simpler structure having the same basic function—a process of refinement.
How was chitin modified to serve an additional function? Chitin is a long-chain polysaccharide that serves as an armor or cell wall for fungi and arthropods, including all crustaceans and insects.
How were flippers of penguins modified for a new function? Flippers of penguins are an example of natural selection.
Embryology The science of the development of an embryo from the fertilization of the ovum to the fetus stage.
