Chapter 11 Biology
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Genetics | The scientific study of heredity |
| Gamete | Sex Cells, haploid |
| Trait | A specific characteristic that varies from one individual to another |
| Homozygous | Organisms that have two identical alleles for a particular trait |
| Hybrid | The offspring of crosses between parents with different traits |
| Heterozygous | Organisms that have two different alleles for the same trait |
| Segregation | Separation |
| Phenotype | physical characteristics |
| Independent Assortment | Genes that segregate independently |
| Genotype | Genetic makeup(gene combination for a trait) |
| Incomplete Dominance | When one allele is not completely dominant over another |
| Haploid | One set of chromosomes |
| Co-dominance | Where both alleles contribute to the phenotype |
| Diploid | Two sets of chromosomes |
| Multiple Alleles | Genes have more than two alleles |
| Meiosis | A process of reduction in which the number of chromosomes per cell is cut in half through separation of homologous chromosomes in a diploid cell |
| Polygenic Traits | Having many genes |
| Tetrad | In prophase of meiosis 1, however, each chromosome pairs with its corresponding homologous chromosomes to form a structure called a tetrad |
