| Trait | a certain characteristic |
| Hybrid | the offspring of two parents with dominant and recessive alleles |
| Segregation | the separation of alleles |
| Gamete | haploid or sex cells |
| homozygous | having two pairs of recessive of dominant alleles |
| heterozygous | having one each of dominant and recessive |
| phenotype | displayed characteristic |
| genotype | genetic code, ex. Ff |
| independent assortment | alleles do not affect each other during meiosis and sort independently |
| incomplete dominance | both alleles combine when expressed |
| codominance | both alleles express, but do not combine, ex. speckled roosters |
| multiple alleles | more than one possible allele |
| polygenic traits | traits influenced by more than one allele |
| haploid | having one set, or half, the number of chromosomes |
| diploid | having both sets of chromosomes, or 2n |
| meisosis | cell division halving the number of chromesomes |
| tetrad | two homologous chromosomes lining up together during meisosis |
