Vocabulary terms for chapter 11

genetics the study of how traits get passed done from generation to generation
trait characteristics that can be passed down
hybrid organisms with different traits combine and have offspring
segregation the separation between the same groups of alleles
gamete sex cells that only have half the amount of chromosomes as a normal cell
homozygous organisms that have two of the same type of allele (TT)(tt)
heterozygous organisms that have two different alleles for the same trait (Tt)
phenotype physical characteristics of an organism
genotype genetic make-up of an organism
independent assortment when two different alleles segregate separately, the formation of random pairs
incomplete dominance when one allele does not completely surpass the other
co-dominance when both alleles correspond with each other to make a combined trait physical appearance
multiple alleles when a gene has more than 2 alleles
polygenic traits when traits are determined by the use of more than one gene
haploid having one set of each chromosome
diploid when the chromosomes are in pairs
meiosis sexual reproduction 2n=n
tetrad when homologous pairs attach with each other to exchange parts in meiosis
