Genetics The scientific study of heredity
Trait A specific characteristic that varies from one individual to another
Hybrid The offspring of crosses between parents with different traits
Segregation Separation
Gamete Sex cells
Homozygous Organisms that have two identical alleles for a particular trait
Heterozygous Organisms that have two different alleles for the same trait
Phenotype Physical characteristics
Genotype Genetic makeup (gene combination for a trait)
Independent Assortment Genes that segregate independently
Incomplete Dominance When one allele is not completely dominant over another
Co-dominance Where both alleles contribute to the phenotype
Multiple Alleles Genes have more than two alleles
Polygenic Traits Having many genes
Haploid One set of chromosomes
Diploid Two sets of chromosomes
Meiosis A process of reduction in which the number of chromosomes per cell is cut in half through separation of homologous chromosomes in a diploid cell.
Tetrad In prophase of meiosis 1, however, each chromosome pairs with its corresponding homologous chromosome to form a structure called tetrad
