What are two movements involved with mechanical digestion in the large intestine? Churning, and peristalsis.
What is mass peristalsis? What initiates it? Strong peristalsis wave that begins at the middle of the transverse colon and drives contents into the rectum. Gastrocolic reflex.
Which vitamins are absorbed in the colon? Some B vitamins and Vitamin K
What percentage of water entering the colon is absorbed? 80-90%
What reflex is initiated when feces are pushed into the rectum? Defecation Reflex
What are some muscles involved with the opening of the internal anal sphincter? Diaphragm and abdominal sphincters
What else needs to happen before defecation can occur? Relaxation of external anal sphincter
Where does the pancreas lie? Posterior to the stomach.
99% of the pancreas cells produce... Alkaline exocrine secretions. It neutralizes the chyme entering the small intestine.
Trypsin is an enzyme in the pancreas, what does it do? It digests proteins.
What is the function of amylase? Lipase?(Pancreas) Amylase digests carbs. Lipase digests lipids.
Where does the exocrine secretions of the pancreas empty? Accessory pancreatic duct, pancreatic duct. These empty into the duodenum.
Two chemicals that are metabolized by the liver? ammonia, medications, and alcohol
List 3 cells phagocytosed by the liver? Worn out RBCs, WBCs, bacteria.
Two functions of bile are? emulsification of fats and absorption of fats
What are two functions of the gallbladder? Store and concentrate bile
What two hormones release bile into the duodenum Secretin and cholecystokinin
