| scale | small, flat, platelike structures near the surface of the skin and most fishes; can be ctenoid, cycloid, placoid, or ganoid |
| operculum | movable, protective flap that covers a fish's gills and helps to pump water that enters the mouth and moves over the gills |
| atrium | heart chamber that receives blood from the body |
| ventricle | the heart chamber that pumps blood from the heart to the gills |
