| Mass extinction | large percentage of all living species become extinct in a short period of time. |
| Overexploitation | excessive use of species that have economic value. |
| Habitat destruction | tropical rain forest or regular forests being cleared for agricultural crops or grazing lands. |
| Habitat disruption | a declining population of one species can affect an entire ecosystem |
| Fragmentation of habitat | seperation of an ecosystem into small pieces |
| Pollution | Man made chemicals release into the environment affecting the air, soil, water |
| Biological magnificatio | some toxic substances accumulate in the tissues of organisms in increasing amounts as trophic levels increase |
| Edge effect | creates different environmental conditions |
| Introduced species | often reproduce in large numbers due to a lack of natural predators, estimated 40% of extinctions since 1750 are due to introduced species, examples: fire ants and kudzu |
| Population density | is a measurement of population per unit area or unit volume |
| Limiting factor | limits the growth or development of an organism, population, or process. |
| Dispersion | the action or process of distributing things or people over a wide area |
| Carrying capacity | how much something can carry before it will break down |
