| richter scale | devised by geologist named Charles Richter |
| magnitude | produced during earthquake |
| amplitude | numbers in Richter scale |
| moment magnitude scale | rating scale that measures the energy released by an earthquake |
| modified mercalli scale | rates types of damage and other effects of earthquake |

| tsunami | large ocean wave |
| seismic gap | sections located along faults that are known to be active |
