Genetics Vocabulary
| Term | Definition |

| Gene | The basic unit of heredity that consists of a long continuous thread of DNA on a chromosome. |
| Trait | A characteristic that is inherited. |
| Genetics | The study of heredity patterns and variation of organisms. |
| Heredity | The passing of genes from parents to offspring; the genes are expressed in the traits of the offspring. |
| Allele | Different form of the same gene. |
| Dominant Allele | Masks any other form present. |
| Recessive Allele | The form of a gene that is masked. |
| Homozygous | An individual that has two of the same alleles for a gene. |
| Heterozygous | An individual that has two different alleles for a gene. |
| Test Cross | Crossing an unknown individual with a recessive individual to determine whether the unknown individual is homozygous or hereozygous. |
