Puberty Period of rapid growth and sexual maturation during which the reproductive system becomes fully functional
Testis Primary male reproductive organ; produces sperm
Scrotum External sac that houses the testes
Seminiferous Tubule One of hundreds of tubules in each testis in which sperm develop
Epididymis Organ in the male reproductive system in which sperm mature and are stored
Vas Deferens Tube that carries sperm from the epididymis to the urethra
Semen The combination of sperm and seminal fluid
Ovary In animals, the primary female reproductive organ; produces eggs
Menstrual Cycle Regular body sequence in which an egg develops and is released from the body
Ovulation The release of a mature egg from the ovary into one of the Fallopian tubes
Corpus Luteum Name given to a follicle after ovulation because of its yellow color
Menstruation Discharge of blood and the unfertilized egg from the body
Sexually Transmitted Disease Disease that is spread from person to person by sexual contact
Zygote A fertilized egg
Blastocyst Stage of early development in mammals that consists of a hollow ball of cells
Implantation Process in which the blastocyst attaches to the wall of the uterus
Gastrulation Process of cell migration that results in the formation of the three cell layers- the ectoderm, the mesoderm, and the endoderm
Neurulation The first step in the development of the nervous system
Placenta Specialized organ in placental mammals through which respiratory gases, nutrients, and wastes are exchanged between the mother and her developing young
Fetus A human embryo after eight weeks of development
