| Three main ways molecules/ions can move through a membrane: | Diffusion, active transport & osmosis. |
| Diffusion happens when.. | More particles move from a higher concentration to a lower concentration. we say there's a net movement of particles from higher to lower. |
| Concentration gradient: | The difference in concentration between two places. |
| The overall movement for diffusion is... | DOWN the concentration gradient. |
| Why does diffusion happen? | When substances from a chemical reaction are not needed to they're passed out of the cell. |
| Why does active transport happen? | When a substance is needed from a chemical reaction so it moves into the cell (against the concentration gradient). |
| What do the cells use energy from to do this? | They use energy from respiration to 'pump' the particles. |
| Rate of diffusion into a cell depends on.. | surface area, temperature & concentration gradient. |
| Osmosis: | The net movement of water particles from a dilute to a concentrated solution. |
