Three main ways molecules/ions can move through a membrane: Diffusion, active transport & osmosis.
Diffusion happens when.. More particles move from a higher concentration to a lower concentration. we say there's a net movement of particles from higher to lower.
Concentration gradient: The difference in concentration between two places.
The overall movement for diffusion is... DOWN the concentration gradient.
Why does diffusion happen? When substances from a chemical reaction are not needed to they're passed out of the cell.
Why does active transport happen? When a substance is needed from a chemical reaction so it moves into the cell (against the concentration gradient).
What do the cells use energy from to do this? They use energy from respiration to 'pump' the particles.
Rate of diffusion into a cell depends on.. surface area, temperature & concentration gradient.
Osmosis: The net movement of water particles from a dilute to a concentrated solution.
