| xylem | transport subsystem that carries water upward from the roots to every part of the plant |
| anther | oval sac where meiosis takes place |
| leaves | photosynthesis organs that contain one or more bundles of vascular tissue |
| roots | underground organs that absorb water & minerals |
| cone | seed-bearing structure of gymnosperms |
| cotyledon | the first leaf or pair of leaves produced by the embryo of a seed plant |
| flower | seed-bearing structure of angiosperms |
| carpels | also called pistils, contains the stigma, style & ovary |
| stigma | sticky portion that sits at the top of the style |
| seed | an embryo of a plant that is encased in a protective covering and surrounded by a food supply |
| stem | supporting structures that connect roots and leaves, carrying water and nutrients between them |
| fibrous roots | when there is no single primary root and no root grows any larger than the others |
| phloem | transport subsystem that carries solutions of nutrients and carbohydrates |
| taproot | long, thick primary root |
| embryo | an organism in its early stage of development |
| vascular tissue | specialized system to transport water & nutrients throughout the plant |
| stamen | made up of anther and filamnent |
| ovary | contains one or more ovules where female gametophyte is produced |
| filament | long,thin stalk that supports the anther |
