Genetics

Genetics The study of heredity
Geneticist A scientist who studies heredity
Gregor Mendel The father of genetics
Fertilization egg and sperm cells joined together to make a new cell
Chromosomes Threadlike substance in the nucleus that contains the genetic information
Karyotype A picture of chromosomes that are grouped into pairs
Dominant The gene or allele that wins over another allele, such as T
Recessive The allele or gene that appears less often because the dominant allele makes it hide, such as t
Allele Another word for a gene
Homozygous Having 2 of the same alleles for a trait (like TT or tt)
Heterozygous Having 2 different alleles for a trait (like Tt)
Genotype The genetic makeup or type, such as Tt, or TT
Phenotype The physical characteristics or traits, such as tall or short.
Punnett Square A method to determine the probable traits of offspring of parents.
Probability The likelihood that one trait will appear over another.
