| Genetics | The study of heredity |
| Geneticist | A scientist who studies heredity |
| Gregor Mendel | The father of genetics |
| Fertilization | egg and sperm cells joined together to make a new cell |
| Chromosomes | Threadlike substance in the nucleus that contains the genetic information |
| Karyotype | A picture of chromosomes that are grouped into pairs |
| Dominant | The gene or allele that wins over another allele, such as T |
| Recessive | The allele or gene that appears less often because the dominant allele makes it hide, such as t |
| Allele | Another word for a gene |
| Homozygous | Having 2 of the same alleles for a trait (like TT or tt) |
| Heterozygous | Having 2 different alleles for a trait (like Tt) |
| Genotype | The genetic makeup or type, such as Tt, or TT |
| Phenotype | The physical characteristics or traits, such as tall or short. |
| Punnett Square | A method to determine the probable traits of offspring of parents. |
| Probability | The likelihood that one trait will appear over another. |
