Cell Cycle

The Cell Cycle.

TermDefinition
Prophase First stage in mitosis, nuclear envelope dissolves.
Centriole Origin of spindle fibers.
Equator Where chromosomes align during metaphase.
Centromere Holds sister chromatids together.
Anaphase Sister chromatids get pulled apart.
Daughter Cell One of the two cells at the end of mitosis.
Telophase Last stage of mitosis, nuclear envelope reforms.
Diploid Cell containing the full complement of chromosomes.
Interphase Longest portion of cell cycle.
Synthesis Put together or copy.
Cytokinesis Division of cytoplasm and organelles.
Chromatin Relaxed form of DNA.
Chromosome DNA containing structure.
Sister Chromatids Contains identical copies of DNA held together.
Spindle Fiber Structure used to move DNA into position.
Metaphase Middle phase of mitosis, DNA lines up at equator.
Crossing Over Chromosomes swapping genetic material during metaphase I.
Haploid Cell containing half the full complement of chromosomes.
Gamete Reproductive cell made through meiosis (egg or sperm cell).
Cell Cycle Cycle of growing and dividing that cells reproduce by.
Mitosis Stage of the cell cycle during which the cell's nucleus and nuclear material divide.
Cyclin One of the specific proteins that regulate the cell cycle.
Cyclin-Dependent Kinase Enzyme to which cyclin binds during interphase and mitosis, triggering and controlling activities during the cell cycle.
Cancer Uncontrolled growth and division of cells.
Carcinogens Substances and agents that are known to cause cancer.
Apoptosis Programmed cell death.
Stem Cells Unspecialized cells that can develop into specialized cells when under the right conditions.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
