Environment An organism's surroundings
habitat PLace where an organism lives
Population Same species same area same time
Community All organisms of different species living in the same area
Ecosystem Community an its environment
Niche the way an organism fits into its ecosystem
Species groups of organisms that are able to interbreed
Primary producers Plants 1st trophic level
Primary consumer 2nd trophic level
secondary consumer 3rd trophic level
Symbiosis two different species living together
Commensalism one partner benefits and one does not gain from the symbiotic relationship
Mutualism both organisms gain from the association
epiphyte a plant growing off another
obligate cannot live without the other
decomposers feed on waste material from animals and plants
disease something that is wrong with your body
Nutritional deficiency diseases caused by and unbalanced diet which a nutrient is missing
Psychological diseases caused by the body just going wrong by itself eg. arthritis
Hereditary diseases caused by our genes eg sickle cell anaemia
Pathogenic diseases caused by micro-organisms that get into the body and breed. eg. HIV
hypertension high blood pressure
Anaemia lack of iron needed for haemoglobin in rbc.
Antibiotics help the bodies natural defences against bacterial infection
Stimulants speed up the actions of the CNS
Depressants relax the CNS
Hallucingens temporarily distort reality
Analgesics lower the perception of pain
dependant on drugs can't live without
withdrawal symptoms ill feeling when stopped taking drugs
pathogens micro-organisms that can can disease
incubation period time taken before large enough colony is formed to have an effect on the body
antigens chemicals found on pathogens that are not found in the body
phagocytes able to crawl out of blood through capillary walls and congregate at a wound to destroy bacteria
