| Binomial nomenclature | a two name naming system of animals, plants, fungi, and other organisms. |
| Genus | the first name in a scientific name of an animal. |
| Species | the second name in a scientific name of an animal. |
| Dichotomous key | an aid that is used to identify organisms and that consists of the answers to a series of questions. |
| Archaea | in a modern taxonomic system, a domain made up of prokaryotes that differ from other prokaryotes in the makeup of their cell walls and in their genetics; this domain aligns with the kingdom Archaebacteria. |
| Bacteria | in a modern taxonomic system, a domain made up of prokaryotes that differ from other prokaryoes in the makeup of their cell walls and in their genetics; this domain aligns with the traditional kingdom Eubacteria. |
| Eukarya | in a modern taxonomic system, a domain made up of all eukaryotes; this domain aligns with the traditional kingdoms Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia. |
