diploid an organism or cell having double the basic haploid number of chromosomes
haploid an organism or cell havng only one complete set of chromosomes, ordinarily half the normal diploid number
zygote diploid cell formed when a sperm fertilizes an egg
crossing over the interchange of corresponding chromatid segments of homologous chromosomes with their linked genes
meiosis the process of producing sperm and egg (gametes)
gamete a mature sexual reproductive cell, as a sperm or egg, that unites with another cell to form a new organism
pedigree a line of ancestors; a family tree
sex-linked carried by a sex chromosome, especially anx chromosome used of genes
law of independent assortment the principle that states that the alleles for a trait separate gametes are formed
allele an alternative form of a gene (one member of a pair) that is located at a specific position on a specific chromosome
