Science vocabulary

TermDefinition
reptile an ectoderm vertebrate that has lungs and scaly skin.
amniotic egg an egg with a shell and internal memebranes that keep the embryo moist.
mammal an endothermic vertebrate with a four chambered heart, skin covered with hair, and mothers fee their young.
monotremes a mammal that lays eggs.
marsupial a mammal whose young are born alive at an early stage of development and continue to develop in the mother's pouch.
gestation period the length of time between fertilization and birth of a mammal.
placenta a membrane that becomes the link between the developing embryo and the mother.
contour feather a large feather that helps give shape to a bird's body.
down feathers a short, fluffy feather that traps heat and keeps a bird warm.
ectoderm an animal whose body does not produce much internal heat.
