| marsupial | a mammal whose young are born alive at an early stage of development and continue to develop in the mother's pouch. |
| gestation period | the length of time between fertilization and birth of a mammal. |
| placenta | a membrane that becomes the link between the developing embryo and the mother. |
| contour feather | a large feather that helps give shape to a bird's body. |
| down feathers | a short, fluffy feather that traps heat and keeps a bird warm. |
| ectoderm | an animal whose body does not produce much internal heat. |
