| homeostasis | condition in which an organism's internal environment is kept stable in spite of changes in the outside envionment |

| vertebrae | 26 small bones that make up the backbone |
| ligament | strong connective tissues that hold bones together |
| compact bone | layer in bones that is hard and dense but not solid and contains minerals that give bones strength |

| marrow | connective tissue in bones, makes blood cells and stores fat |
| cartilage | strong connective tissue that is more flexible than bone |
| osteoporosis | a condition in which bones become weak and break easily |
| involuntary muscle | muscles not under conscious control |
| voluntary muscle | muscles under conscious control |
| skeletal muscle | provide foce that moves your bones |
| tendon | connective tissue attaches muscle to bone |
| smooth muscle | involuntary muscles that work to control certain movements inside your body |
| cardiac muscle | tissue found only in the heart |
| striated muscle | skeletal muscle cells that appear banded or striated |
| epidermis | outer layer of skin |
| melanin | pigment that colors skin |
| dermis | inner layer of skin |
| pore | openings that allow sweat to reach the surface |
| follicle | strands of hair that grow within the dermis |
