Chapter 14
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Geologic Time Scale | model showing major geological and biological events in Earth's history |
| era | largest division of geologic time scale; it is divided into smaller parts |
| fossil | preserved evidence of an organism that shows evidence of past life; 4 types |
| Cambrian Explosion | a time during the Paleozoic Era when there was rapid diversification of most major animal groups |
| Endiosymbiont Theory | eukaryiotic cells may have evolved from prokaryotic cells |
| biogenesis (Theory of Biogenesis) | only living organisms can produce other living organisms |
| spontaneous generation | the idea that life comes from non-living things (fly experiment) |
| period | subdivision of "era" on the Geologic Time Scale |
| Paleontologist | scientist who studies fossils |
| relative dating | method of dating fossil by comparing it to the rock layers around it |
| radiometric dating | determining the age of a fossil or rock by measuring age using the rate of decay of radioactive isotopesh |
| half-life | amount of time for half of a radioactive isotope to decay |
| plate tectonics | geologic theory that Earth's surface is divided into huge land masses that move around on magma |
| K-T Boundary | layer of indium rich material between rocks in the Creataceous and Paleogene periods that provide edidence of a meteor impact |
| Law of Superposition | oldest layers of rock are at the bottom and the newer ones are on top |
| Trace fossil | an imprint, like foot prints |
| Molds & casts | mold of the outside is then filled with minerals/rock to make a cast or copy |
| Replacement fossil | copies of the insides of the organism |
| Petrified fossil | organism is turned to stone when minerals gradually replace it. (petrified wood) |
| Amber/preserved remains | Tree sap hardens and catches and preserves small organisms. (like mosquito in Jurassic Pk) |
| Preserved remains | organism trapped in amber or tar or ice |
| Original material | actual bones or the "Ice Man" |
