Cell Organelles

TermDefinition
Cell Wall Helps to protect and support the cell. Rigid layer of nonliving material. Surrounds the cell. Found in plant cells. Not found in animal cells. Made of cellulose. Water and oxygen pass through easily.
Cell Membrane Controls what substances go into and out of the cell. Surrounds the cell. Prevents harmful substances from entering the cell.
Nuclear Membrane The membrane that surrounds the nucleus. Allows materials to pass in and through its pores.
Nucleolus A part of the nucleus where ribosomes are made
Cytoplasm The region between the cell membrane and the nucleus. A clear thick gel-like fluid. Many organelles are found in this fluid.
Mitochondria Rod-shaped structures. Powerhouse of the cell. Converts energy in food molecules to energy the cell can be used to carry out the cell’s functions.
Endoplasmic Reticulum Passageways that carries proteins and other materials from one part of the cell to another.
Ribosomes Small grain like bodies that float in the cytoplasm or they are attached to the endoplasmic reticulum. This organelle produces proteins.
Golgi Bodies This organelle receives proteins and other newly formed materials from the endoplasmic reticulum, package them, and distribute them to other parts of the cell. This organelle also receives materials from outside the cell.
Chloroplasts Mostly the cells of plants have this Green organelle. It captures energy from sunlight and uses this energy to produce food for the cell. This organelle cause leaves to be green.
Vacuoles Storage areas in the cell that store water, food, waste products and other materials. This organelle is larger in plant cells
Lysosomes A small round structures containing chemicals that break down certain materials in the cell. This organelle breaks down old cell parts and release the substances so that they can be used again.
Bacterial Cells This cell does not have a nucleus. It’s genetic material is located in the cytoplasm. Has a cell wall and a cell membrane.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
