Vocab list for chapter 6 science

TermDefinition
Differentation In humans, the process in which cell layers will eventually form the organs and tissues of a baby/ The operation that humans carry out in order to form the stuff for a baby.
Diploid Number Two sets of chromosomes; the diploid number for humans is 46, (2x23)/ what they call two chromosome groups
Embryo the stage of a multicellular organism that develops from a zygote/
Embryonic Development Early development of a multicellular organism following fertilization/ the development that we go through as embryos
External Fertilization Fertilization in which a sperm cell and an egg cell unite outside the bodies of the parents/ when the magic happens outside of the parent's magic making places.
Fertilization The process during which an egg cell is penetrated by a sperm cell and the haploid genetic information of both male and female/The process that makes a new organism
Gametes Specialized cells necessary for reproduction; in animals, males gametes are called sperm cells and female gametes are called egg cells/The thing that is your magic making materials.
Genetic Diversity Inherited genetic differences in a species that give many organisms a survival advantage/the naturally gotten thing from your parents that makes you and your species extra special and good.
Haploid Number Each set of chromosomes, half the diploid number; humans inherit one set of 23 chromosomes from their female parent and 23 from their male parent/ Half the dippy is the happy.
Homologous Chromosomes A pair of matching chromosomes./ Two sets of chromosome that are exactly the same.
Internal Fertilization Fertilization in which sperm cells are deposited inside the female's body where they can meet egg cells./ When the magic is Happening and the parents can't see it because it is inside of them.
Mating The process in which gametes arrive in the same place at the same time./When one magic making material finds another magic making Material and they come together and do their thing.
Meiosis the process that process that produces gametes with half the number of chromosomes As body cells/The magic making materials are made in this pricess
Sexual Reproduction Reproduction that requires two parents and produces offspring that are genetically different from each other, from either parent, and from any other organism in their Species./The magic making that produces special members of their species.
Zygote The new diploid cell formed by the process of fertilization, which receives half its chromosomes, from its female parent and half from its male parent. The cell with two sets of chromosomes formed by magic making.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
