Genetic Engineering
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Selective Breeding | a method of choosing animals or plants that have desirable characteristics and breeding them to produce offspring that have the same desirable characteristics |
| Inbreeding | Crossing individuals who are closely related to maintain desirable characteristics |
| Purebred | This has the same alleles for a specific trait such as BB or bb. It can also be called homozygous. |
| Hybrid Vigor | Offspring that are hardier and healthier than the parents |
| Genetic Engineering | the science in which scientists take DNA fragments from one species and insert them into the DNA of another species |
| Biotechnology | Using the knowledge of biology to produce a positive effect in organisms- an example is genetic engineering. |
| Eukaryotic | relating to organisms that have a nucleus bound by a membrane |
| Prokaryotic | Relating to cells that lack a nucleus. |
| Vector | Defined as a carrier. These carriers might carry DNA, pollen, malaria, etc. A bee acts as this for transporting pollen between flowers. A mosquito acts as this for transmitting the plasmodium that causes malaria in humans. |
| DNA Fingerprinting | A technique used to identify one organisms from another using genetic material (DNA). When using this process, a scientist looks for a pattern of bands that is unique for every organism. |
| Electrophoresis | Tthe migration of particles in an electric field through a solution. This process is used for analyzing the size of charged particles. |
