Lesson 25

Genes and Gene Expression

TermDefinition
Genes segments of DNA, responsible for the passing of traits and the expression of those traits. These segments code for proteins
Incomplete Dominance An allele that is not fully dominant over an inactive allele is described as having this. Good examples of this are snapdragons. If you had a red-flowered plant and crossed it with a white-flowered plant, all of the offspring would be pink-flowered plants
Codominance is a characteristic that occurs when two alleles of a gene are both dominant. This dual dominance results in both alleles being expressed
Polygenic Genetic traits that are determined by a large number of genes, each one usually having a relatively small effect
Sex-linked a term which is used to describe genes that are found on sex chromosomes
